Rally for Marriage Equality

On June 22 people from all across the state will gather in front of the capitol building at 10am on Saturday, June 22 in Harrisburg in support of marriage equality and non-discrimination for members of the LGBT community.

The rally will take place on the stairs and sidewalks surrounding the building (North 3rd and State Street). Participants will make their voices heard to the PA legislature, letting them know that the entire state of PA is demanding true equality and civil rights for all.

PFP Vice-Chair Wendy Forbes is one of the organizers of the event, and PFP is cosponsoring a bus that leaves from the William Way Center at 7am. E-mail Wendy for more details.

Moms Potluck

Meetup at Smith Playground

PFP parents and their kids will be at Smith Playground in Fairmount Park to play in their huge outdoor playground on Saturday, July 27 at 10:00 am. Appropriate for the 12 and under set. Look for folks wearing PFP stickers or t-shirts.

The playground has a new toddler area appropriate for crawlers up to five years old (including baby swings), lots of climbing equipment for the older set and a 40 foot long wooden slide for everyone!

RSVP to Sandra (sandra@phillyfamilypride.org) if you’d like her to look for you. Smith Playground is free admission with free parking, but they do ask you to consider making a small donation on your way in or out.

Bring a lunch and picnic blanket to relax on the front lawn after playground time.

In the event of rain, the 5 and under set will meet in the playhouse.

Dads and Single Friends Mixer by the Pool

For a twist on the usual Dads Potlucks, we’re holding a mixer at the (free!) Ridgway Pool at 12th and Carpenter in South Philly on Saturday, June 29th at noon for dads, pops, their kids, prospective dad couples and their single friends who either who have kids or want kids.

Bring all your swim stuff, lunch and a picnic blanket or chairs – and don’t forget your single friends! RSVP to info@phillyfamilypride.org. Rain date on Sunday, June 30th.

Equality Forum

Philadelphia Family Pride presented two collaborative programs for LGBT parents and prospective parents as part of the 2013 Equality Forum.

Both took place at the University of the Arts in Center City Philadelphia in Room 706 in Terra Hall, 211 S. Broad Street.

“Surrogacy for Prospective LGBT Parents” from 1:00pm – 2:15pm
A panel of specialists and parents who have used a surrogate will help you answer the question: Is surrogacy for us? Attendees will gather more information about the process, costs, emotional investment and logistics of surrogacy.

“LGBT Parenthood” from 2:30pm – 3:45pm
A panel of LGBT parents who created their families in different ways share stories about their personal journeys to parenthood and discusses the benefits and challenges of the paths they took.

Following the workshops, PFP hosted the very popular and free Prospective Parent Happy Hour from 4:00-5:30pm in the lobby of the nearby William Way Center (1315 Spruce Street). This gave workshop participants and presenters a chance to chat informally. Snacks and drinks were provided.

Philly Pride Parade & Festival

Join PFP at 11:30am on Sunday, June 9 at 13th and Locust and board the PFP trolley in the Philly Pride Parade. The parade goes from the Gayborhood in Center City to Penn’s Landing, arriving around between 1-1:30pm. We are normally near the front of the parade, so families can get out and watch, go the festival or catch a ride on the trolley back to Center City.

At Penn’s Landing, Philly Family Pride will again be sponsoring the Family Zone during the Pride Festival as a place for LGBT parents to stop by with their kids.

Thanks to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion for sponsoring the trolley again this year.

Summer Potluck Picnic

Philly Family Pride’s annual summer picnic will be held again this year at the Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown, PA from 11am – 2pm on Saturday, July 13.

This is a potluck picnic. Please bring a salad or other entree to share and serving utensils. PFP will provide the drinks, paper products and supplementary food.

The picnic is free for members and $10/person for non-members. Kids 2 and under are free. (You can always join to make your admission free, too!)

Admission to the zoo is included; parking is free. There is also a playground near the picnic pavilion.

Ice Cream Social in Provincetown

Elements LGBTQ Womyn of Color Conference

Philadelphia Family Pride was happy to support the 2012 4th Annual LGBTQ Womyn of Color Conference: Flowing Further, which took place at the William Way Center (1315 Spruce St.) October 12-14.

PFP facilitated a workshop on Saturday, October 13 from 3:15-5:00pm “Creating and Nurturing Your Family,” Presenting were PFP board members Deidre Ashton and Sandra Telep and PFP member Shenu Gupta.

LGBTQ parents of color shared their stories about how they have created and nurture their families. They discussed the unique challenges and opportunities they face, as well as ways that they integrate multiple aspects of identity in their families and communities. Different paths to parenthood were represented with ample opportunity for questions and interaction.
